Description

These crispy wonton cups are filled with a savory and sweet honey BBQ chicken mixture, topped with smoky crumbled bacon, melted cheddar cheese, and fresh chives. Perfect for entertaining, game day parties, or anytime you need an impressive appetizer that comes together in less than an hour.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 24 square wonton wrappers, about 2 per cup for a sturdy shell
  • 350 g cooked shredded chicken, rotisserie chicken works perfectly
  • 120 ml BBQ sauce, your favorite variety
  • 1 tablespoon honey, for sweetness and gloss
  • 150 g shredded cheddar cheese, or a sharp cheddar for more flavor
  • 6 bacon slices, cooked crisp and crumbled
  • 2 tablespoons chopped chives, for a fresh garnish
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons oil, for brushing wrappers and greasing the tin
  • Optional toppings, red pepper flakes, sour cream, ranch dip, green onions, or cilantro

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Wonton Cups:
  2. 1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly brush a standard muffin tin with oil to prevent sticking.
  3. 2. Lay out your wonton wrappers on a clean work surface and lightly brush both sides of each wrapper with oil using a pastry brush.
  4. 3. Press 2 oiled wonton wrappers into each muffin cup, overlapping them slightly at angles to create a cup shape with ruffled edges.
  5. 4. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until the wonton cups are golden brown and crispy, then remove and let cool for 2 minutes before filling.
  6. Make the Honey BBQ Chicken Filling:
  7. 1. In a medium bowl, mix together the shredded chicken, BBQ sauce, honey, and garlic powder until the chicken is evenly coated and the mixture is well combined.
  8. 2. Gently fold in the crumbled bacon, being careful not to break it into tiny pieces.
  9. 3. Add more honey if you prefer extra sweetness, or more garlic powder for additional depth of flavor.
  10. Assemble and Broil:
  11. 1. Spoon the honey BBQ chicken and bacon mixture evenly into each wonton cup, filling them just below the rim.
  12. 2. Top each cup with about 1 tablespoon of shredded cheddar cheese, mounding it slightly to ensure melting coverage.
  13. 3. Place the filled cups under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  14. 4. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with fresh chopped chives, and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
