Description

Chicken Parmesan Wonton Cups feature crispy baked wonton wrappers filled with tender breaded chicken, tangy marinara sauce, and melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. These elegant appetizers deliver all the flavors of classic chicken parmesan in an easy-to-eat, handheld format perfect for entertaining or game day entertaining.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 24 wonton wrappers, square or round, thawed if frozen
  • 350 g fully cooked breaded chicken, diced into bite-sized pieces
  • 180 g marinara sauce, thick consistency works best to prevent soggy cups
  • 180 g shredded mozzarella cheese, whole milk variety for best melting
  • 30 g grated Parmesan cheese, adds a sharp, salty finish
  • 12 small fresh basil leaves, for garnish
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, optional but recommended for authentic flavor
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil, for brushing the wonton wrappers
  • Optional toppings:, red pepper flakes, fresh minced garlic, pine nuts, or panko breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a muffin tin with cooking spray or a small amount of olive oil. This prevents sticking and ensures even browning.
  2. Brush and shape: Lightly brush one side of each wonton wrapper with olive oil, then gently press each wrapper into a muffin cup oil side down, allowing the edges to rise slightly above the rim. This creates the cup structure.
  3. Bake the shells: Bake the empty wonton cups for 8-10 minutes until they're light golden and crispy but still pliable enough to handle. Remove and set aside to cool slightly while you prepare the filling.
  4. Combine chicken and sauce: In a medium bowl, mix the diced breaded chicken with the marinara sauce and dried oregano until evenly coated. The warm sauce will help meld the flavors together beautifully.
  5. Layer the cheeses: Have your shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan ready in separate small bowls for easy assembly. Keep them within arm's reach as you fill the cups.
  6. Fill the cups: Spoon a generous teaspoon of the chicken mixture into each wonton cup, filling them about three-quarters full. Don't overfill or the sauce may bubble over during baking.
  7. Top with cheese: Sprinkle approximately 1 teaspoon of mozzarella over each cup, then top with a light pinch of Parmesan cheese for that signature sharp finish.
  8. Final bake: Return the filled wonton cups to the oven and bake for 12-15 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden brown on top. Watch carefully during the last few minutes to prevent burning.
  9. Garnish and serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes, then top each cup with a single fresh basil leaf if desired. Serve warm while the cheese is still gooey and delicious.
