Description

These Soft Christmas Peppermints (Old-Fashioned Butter Mints) are the perfect festive treat for the holiday season. Whether you’re looking for easy Christmas candy, holiday snack ideas, or a quick no-bake recipe, these butter mints tick all the boxes. With just a few simple ingredients and optional food coloring, you can create colorful, delightful mints that everyone will love. Perfect for parties, cookie trays, or after-dinner bites.

Ingredients

Scale

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/4 teaspoon salt (omit if using salted butter)

1/4 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon pure peppermint extract

4 cups powdered sugar

gel food coloring (red, green, or festive options)

optional decorative candy molds or cookie cutters

Instructions

1. Cream the softened butter in a large mixing bowl using a hand or stand mixer until light and fluffy.

2. Mix in the heavy cream and peppermint extract until fully blended and smooth.

3. Gradually add powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating after each addition until the dough is thick and pliable.

4. Divide the dough into separate portions and color each with gel food coloring of your choice.

5. Roll each portion into a 1/2-inch thick rope and cut into bite-sized pieces or press into molds.

6. Place mints on parchment-lined trays and let them air dry at room temperature for 4–6 hours or overnight.

7. Once dried, transfer mints to an airtight container lined with parchment between layers for storage.

Notes

Let the mints dry overnight to ensure they have a firm outer shell but stay soft inside.

Always use gel food coloring to prevent altering the dough’s consistency.

To make molded shapes pop out cleanly, dust the mold with powdered sugar before filling.
