Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)

Cold Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, freshly shredded

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg

Topping

  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley or 1 tablespoon fresh chopped parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease or line a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Fold in shredded cheddar cheese.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk buttermilk and egg together.
  6. Add wet ingredients to dry and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Spoon dough into loaf pan in chunky layers for pull-apart texture.
  8. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. While warm, brush the top with melted butter mixed with garlic powder and parsley.
  10. Let cool for 10 minutes in pan, then transfer to a wire rack.
