2 cups granulated sugar

¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2 tsp baking powder

1½ tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

1 cup buttermilk

½ cup vegetable oil

2 large eggs

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup hot water (or hot coffee)

For the Chocolate Buttercream:

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

3½ cups powdered sugar

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

¼ cup heavy cream

1 tsp vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

For the Ganache:

1 cup semi-sweet Nestlé Toll House chocolate chips

½ cup heavy cream

Optional Toppings:

Chocolate chunks or curls

White chocolate chips

Extra buttercream for piping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans or line with parchment.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Mix in buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla until just combined. Stir in hot water or coffee.

  4. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake 30–35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.

  5. Let cakes cool 10 minutes in pans, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

  6. For buttercream: Beat softened butter. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Add vanilla, salt, and cream until smooth and fluffy.

  7. Level cakes if needed. Spread buttercream between layers and over top and sides.

  8. Make ganache: Heat cream until simmering, pour over chocolate chips, let sit, then stir smooth.

  9. Cool ganache slightly and pour over frosted cake, letting it drip beautifully.

  10. Decorate with piped swirls, chocolate chunks, or chips. Chill slightly before serving.
