Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
1 and 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup milk or buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease or line a standard loaf pan.
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and optional garlic powder or herbs.
3. Add the cold cubed butter and cut it into the flour using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
4. Fold in the shredded cheddar cheese evenly.
5. Pour in the milk or buttermilk and stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
6. Transfer the dough to the prepared loaf pan and spread it evenly.
7. Bake for 40–45 minutes or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
8. Let the loaf cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Slice and serve warm.
Notes
Freshly shredded cheese gives the best melt.
Avoid overmixing to keep the loaf tender.
Add herbs or garlic powder for extra flavor.
Freezes well for up to 2 months.
