Ingredients
1 deep-dish pie crust
0.5 pound ground beef
0.5 pound Italian sausage
20 slices pepperoni
1 teaspoon garlic powder
0.5 teaspoon onion powder
0.5 teaspoon black pepper
1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
2.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
0.5 cup ricotta cheese (optional)
0.25 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 cup pizza sauce
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
0.5 teaspoon sugar
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Press pie crust into a deep 9–10 inch pie dish and prick the bottom with a fork. Line with parchment and fill with pie weights. Blind bake for 10–12 minutes, then remove weights and let cool slightly.
2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and sausage until browned. Add garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Drain well.
3. In a bowl, mix pizza sauce with Italian seasoning and sugar. Set aside.
4. Spread 1 cup of mozzarella on the bottom of the pre-baked crust. Add half of the meat mixture, a few dollops of ricotta, and a drizzle of sauce. Sprinkle with Parmesan.
5. Repeat the layering: mozzarella, meat, sauce, Parmesan, finishing with a thick layer of mozzarella.
6. Top with pepperoni slices and any extra toppings (optional).
7. Place pie dish on a baking sheet and bake for 25–30 minutes until the top is bubbly and golden.
8. Let rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
Blind baking the crust ensures it won’t go soggy from the heavy fillings.
Draining the meat thoroughly is essential to keep the pie from becoming greasy.
Letting it rest before slicing helps the layers set and makes for clean slices.
