1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

Red decorating sugar, for topping

Green decorating sugar, for topping


Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

3. In a large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy (2–3 minutes).

4. Add egg and vanilla extract and mix until combined.

5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until a dough forms.

6. Scoop tablespoon-sized dough balls and place them on the prepared baking sheets.

7. Flatten each ball with a fork in a criss-cross pattern.

8. Sprinkle tops generously with red or green decorating sugar.

9. Bake for 8–10 minutes until edges are set but not browned.

10. Let cool on the baking sheet for 2–3 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Always use room-temperature butter for a perfectly creamed texture.

Don’t overbake; cookies should still look slightly underdone when pulled from the oven.

Store with a slice of bread in an airtight container to keep cookies soft for days.
