  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (devil’s food or fudge)
  • 1 can (12–14 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 bag (11 oz) caramel bits or wrapped caramels, unwrapped
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Pinch of sea salt (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, melt caramel bits with 1/2 cup evaporated milk until smooth.
  3. Spread half of the dry chocolate cake mix evenly in the baking dish.
  4. Pour the melted caramel mixture over the cake mix layer.
  5. Sprinkle the remaining cake mix evenly over the caramel.
  6. Drizzle melted butter over the top layer. Add chocolate chips if using.
  7. Bake for 35–40 minutes until the top is set and edges are bubbling.
  8. Let cool for 5–10 minutes before serving. Top with vanilla ice cream.
