The Best Apple Turnover Recipe

  • Author: Sally Thompson
  • Total Time: 1 minute
  • Yield: 8 turnovers 1x

Description

Flaky, buttery pastry filled with a warm, spiced apple filling and topped with a sweet glaze – these easy Apple Turnovers are the ultimate treat! Perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a snack, they come together quickly with store-bought puff pastry and a handful of pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets puff pastry (about 1 lb), thawed
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour, for dusting
  • 1 ½ lb Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 ½ tbsp butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ tsp kosher salt
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten with 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)

For the glaze:

  • ¾ cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 tbsp half and half
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400˚F (200˚C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Apple Filling: In a medium skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add diced apples and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Reduce heat to low, stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Let the mixture simmer until the apples are caramelized and the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature.
  3. Roll Out the Puff Pastry: Lightly dust your work surface with flour. Roll out each sheet of puff pastry into a 10-inch square, then cut into four equal squares (eight squares total).
  4. Assemble the Turnovers: Place a spoonful of apple filling into the center of each pastry square, leaving a ½-inch border. Brush edges with egg wash, fold each square diagonally to form a triangle, and press edges with a fork to seal.
  5. Bake: Arrange turnovers on the prepared baking sheet. Cut two small slits in the top of each turnover, then brush with remaining egg wash. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden and puffed.
  6. Prepare the Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together confectioners’ sugar, half and half, and vanilla until smooth.
  7. Glaze and Serve: Remove turnovers from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Drizzle with glaze and serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350˚F oven for a few minutes.
  • Freezing: Freeze unglazed turnovers for up to 2 months. Reheat directly from frozen in a 350˚F oven until warmed through.
